Assignment 3 - Interpreting a Quote (Variation 3)

Variation 3

Not all Who Wander are Lost
— J. R. R. Tolkien

This is my third variation based on the quote "Not all who wander are lost" by J. R. R. Tolkien. I changed the lighting to be night/moonlight and I completely remade the tiger from scratch (this time a Golden Tabby) because the previous version didn't really even look like a tiger. I chose to do a split complementary color scheme (red-orange/blue/green).

I continued to use the custom wet brush and I also used a custom airbrush to paint in the shadows. I saw that Aaron Blaise has a lot of classes on sale right now so I bought a few classes and I also watched some of his old painting live streams. Watching him paint helped me to improve my own work a lot. The biggest thing I took away from watching him is that he paints flat colors first and then paints the shadows on top using a multiply layer. This helped me get really believable shadows much more quickly and easily.

I also added a radial gradient to the entire image to darken the outer edges and bring the focus more on the tiger. Now that the foreground branches were extremely dark, it made it really easy to add in plants because I just needed a silhouette. I found two creative commons images of ferns and grasses and used those to add plants to the foreground.
