Digital Painting Drawing 1
I’m taking a class at American River College in order to learn Digital Painting in Corel Painter. The first assignment is to draw either our hand or our foot using Pencil, Charcoal and/or Pastel brushes in a Monochromatic or Achromatic color scheme. I chose to draw my hand in a monochromatic color scheme.
I used the Real 6B Soft Pencil for the sketching and lineart, the Blunt Hard Pastel brush for the shading and tinting, the Sharp Chalk brush for crosshatching, and the Round Oil Pastel brush for the background.
I had a few minor issues during the process. First of all, since there are so many different brushes, I kept getting confused about which brushes I had used before. Next time I'll make sure to write them down as I go. Secondly, there were times where I expected the program to behave like Photoshop and other photo editing software but Painter did not. For instance, I painted the shading past the lineart and then used a mask to mask out the excess afterward. I wanted to copy the mask to a new layer so I could do the same with the tinting but I could not find a way of doing that other than redoing it from scratch or duplicating the layer and then erasing the contents of the layer, which worked but wasn't ideal. It seemed that there also isn't a way to apply a layer mask to a group which is somewhat annoying but I found ways around it. Most of the problems I had with the program arose when I tried to get it to behave as Photoshop does which tells me that I need to re-train my brain to work with Painter since it has some fundamental differences from Photoshop.
