Digital Painting Drawing 2

This week, the assignment was to draw a man-made object using Pen and Marker brushes in Corel Painter. For the color scheme, we could choose between Analogous Warm or Analogous Cool. I wanted to choose Analogous Cool because I’m drawn to the cool colors of the color wheel, so I chose the Analogous Warm color scheme (when it comes to my art, I like to branch out and do things that I normally wouldn’t.)

I decided to draw a little clay toucan I have that was made in Costa Rica; it was my grandmother’s. I used the Scratchy Dry Tip Marker for the majority of the color, the Croquil and Real Drippy pens for the Lineart, and the Coit pen for the cross-hatching. The squiggle detail in the shadow is the Leaky marker (I was actually just testing the pen but I loved the look of the line so I decided to keep it.)

I had some trouble getting started with this project because I had to figure out how to use the markers without making them look messy and too dark where they overlap. I don't like working with markers in real life because of that aspect so it took some time to get used to them. I was able to get an effect I liked by turning up the Dryout setting to max (which controls how quickly the "ink" runs out) so that I could color large areas in one stroke. I was careful to color the image in large, clean strokes so I could get nice gradients of color without all the harsh lines where the pens overlap. I have a tendency to create extremely soft gradients so I added some cross-hatching over the top as contrast and to make the image more interesting.
